Nintendo has announced its launch plans for the 3DS eShop next week, and it includes a few free goodies to kick off the proceedings. The firmware update on June 6 will let you download a complimentary copy of ExciteBike 3D, a remastered version of the NES classic. It's only free until July 7, though, so it's better to download sooner than later.
You can also pick up the Pokedex 3D, which lets you see the little monsters from Pokemon Black and White in three glorious dimensions. You can share data with friends using SpotPass, or scan AR markers, and take photos. This may be as close as we get to a new Pokemon Snap.
Nintendo also teased that the Virtual Console will sport Game Boy classics like Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Radar Mission. The announcement didn't announce pricing, and didn't even technically promise that these three titles will be available on launch day, but eShop updates are set to come every Thursday.
Also at launch, you can download a free Internet browser capable of showing 3D on sites equipped for it. You can also use it to suspend a game and browse the web, meaning you'll finally be able to look up a walkthrough without losing your place in the game.
The system update will let you download "most" of your DSiWare games to your 3DS as well, and Nintendo promises that the video service with 3D movie trailers and short films is coming "in the near future."
"The Nintendo 3DS system is constantly evolving and growing," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in the announcement. "The Nintendo eShop is a one-stop resource for a broad range of Nintendo information and downloadable games and applications. It expands the Nintendo 3DS experience with new and entertaining content."
In a separate press release, Nintendo announced that it is expanding its AT&T partnership to include 24,000 WiFi hotspots, and 200 Simon shopping malls throughout the country, as well as 1,000 Best Buy stores.
