Call of Duty Elite shutting down this week

Call of Duty Elite was a lucrative, but ultimately short-lived, experiment by Activision. The company experimented with a subscription model with Modern Warfare 3, but opted to switch back to a more traditional Season Pass model with Black Ops 2. "What we have realized is that several of the Call of Duty Elite services which are currently only available to our premium members for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are things that would further unite, engage and delight our player community. So we are going to make them free for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said at the time. With Ghosts, the company offloaded many of those services to a standalone app.

Elite services are still running for Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2--but not for much longer. The service will end this Friday.

In an FAQ (via Joystiq), Activision explains that "there are no plans to bring Call of Duty Elite back," adding that the Call of Duty app "takes some of the best and most popular features of Call of Duty Elite and introduces new elements."

Elite will no longer be in service at 10AM PT on February 28th. However, even with the termination of Elite, all uploaded content will remain live, and stats will continue to exist in-game.
