Sega has decided to use its mobile ports of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to resolve a somewhat obscure piece of its own history. The Remastered version includes the "Hidden Palace Zone," a stage that was cut from the original 1992 classic. Sonic 2 Remastered hits Android today, and a free update on iOS will turn the existing Sonic 2 release to its Remastered version.
The Hidden Palace Zone was shown off in screenshots and even was playable at toy events before the game came out, but the final product had it mysteriously missing. Fans have been able to access a buggy, barely-working version of it with cheat devices, and Sonic creator Yuji Naka has since admitted that a prototype with a more completed Hidden Palace Zone had been stolen from an event. It's all pretty interesting, as weird bits of gaming history go, and it was covered extensively by GameTrailers.
The newly remastered Hidden Palace Zone probably differs significantly from its initial plans, but it's still a nice nod to the series' history. Sonic 2 Remastered also includes a Boss Attack Mode. It's now available on Android and the iOS App Store for $2.99.
