Darkstalkers Resurrection opening sales deemed disappointing

Among Capcom's myriad of beloved classic titles, Darkstalkers stands out as one of its most requested fighting franchises. Capcom recently released Darkstalkers Resurrection on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but Capcom senior VP Christian Svensson says it was a sales disappointment, causing him to question of he misjudged the interest in the game.
Though it appeared on the top 10 lists for the PlayStation Store in March, Svennson told users on the Capcom Unity forums (via GameSpot) that, "sadly, it's not as high on that list as it really needs to be to be successful."
"We're working on promotions and the like to improve the situation. We've not given up," he said. "But I'm disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we've put out on the same platforms given the frequency and urgency of requests we've had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution. It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we've done."
But, he was careful to point the finger inward instead of at the fans. "And before people jump to the wrong conclusions, I'm not blaming fans who did buy it and supported the brand," he said. "I'm very thankful for those guys (thank you, to all of you). I'm more disappointed by my misread of the information in this particular case."
This may not be enough to kill hopes for a proper sequel, but Capcom must be looking to it as a bellwether of fan interest. If it concludes that this means people aren't interested in Darkstalkers, it may take another hiatus.
