Obsidian has returned to the site of Project Eternity's first screenshot for a proper in-motion look at the crowdfunded retro RPG's pre-rendered backgrounds. These aren't your younger self's pre-rendered backgrounds, oh no, as they're jazzed up with shiny tech like dynamic lighting and water which can ebb and flow.
Project Eternity is hoping to "hit the high standard of visual quality" of games built upon BioWare's old Infinity Engine, like Icewind Dale, project director Josh Sawyer explained.
"We also wanted to introduce dynamic elements into the environment that were mostly absent from the classic games, like dynamic water, movement in foliage, and dynamic lighting of the scene."
You'll catch a little peek of some characters moving around in the environment too.
inXile Entertainment is taking a similar approach to backgrounds with its own crowdfunded retro RPG, Torment: Tides of Numenera, which is a "spiritual successor" of sorts to the classic Infinity Engine RPG Planescape: Torment. As the two companies are sharing tools and tech, we may end up with an awful lot of pre-rendered prettiness.
Project Eternity is expected to launch in April 2014 for PC, Mac and Linux. Eager RPG fans coughed up over $4.1 million to fund the game.
