Ubisoft kicked off its pre-E3 press conference with a little rocking from Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, which is certainly always welcome. Oh, but you see, it wasn't all for fun: he was there to unveil a new version of guitar tutorial game Rocksmith, which adds a Session Mode to freestyle, jam and wail away with a virtual band. We expect E3 trailers not to show the actual game. We forgive pre-rendered CGI and look the other way when it's clearly scripted, but the new Dark Souls II trailer simply takes the biscuit. It's 93 seconds long and mostly gameplay footage yet the player only dies perhaps thrice? Pull the other one, Namco Bandai, it's got bells on. Read more

Confirming at E3 that Metal Gear Solid V was indeed coming to Xbox One would not be exciting; we'd all already guessed that. What was jolly ruddy flipping exciting was how Microsoft announced at during its pre-E3 press conference: with a fantastic wonderful lovely gameplay trailer showing off the open-world sneak 'em up. "There has to be a way to get through," Lightning mutters as she approaches a locked gate in the 'E3 Demo Gameplay' trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. No, CGI trailers don't represent gameplay. Yes, they are fluffy marketing to get you unduly excited. But by gum, the cinematic E3 trailer for Ubisoft's open-world cybervigilante 'em up Watch Dogs is awfully pretty, if a bit eerie. We can still enjoy it as an attractive and well-made video for our enjoyment which by pure chance is somehow connected to a video game. Call it tone-setting and world-building, if you must.
