Has the Wii fallen short of its initial promise?

In 2006, I was promised a "new way to play." I thought motion controls would blow the whole scene wide open. And it has, sales-wise - but it hasn't gameplay wise. The Wii's most promising game so far has been Wii Sports. I don't want 'mature' games on the Wii; I just want innovation.

Red Steel was what people looked to when it was announced... a popular genre with a twist. Accuracy that was based on your exact movement, a game that immersed you further than anything prior... obviously that didn't happen. Sure, it wasn't the worst game ever, but people were let down. Another technology appeared that intrigued me, seemed to be what the Wii was supposed to be

Will these be better? Are they taking what works from the Wii and adding to their system? Who knows... the Wii brought new people into the industry and makes you look like you're jerking yourself off... so yes, it lives up to it

Well.. no. The world was promised a gimmick and it got one. Developers are always claiming their product is 'new and exciting', and they never are truly innovative or half as groundbreaking as is made out. Quite why so many people are interested in a control-scheme which eschews the tight and functional controllers which have been developed over the past few decades in favour of a flailing stick is beyond me, but it has shifted units.
All the console developers stifle innovation and quirky games, they refuse to let them be released, how many times have you read interviews where X game is mentioned only to hear that X console dev. won't let it be released on their system? For any of them to tout innovation is a laugh. Personal computers allow that, it's got nothing to do with control schemes and everything to do with the ability to play what you want when you want.

I think Nintendo delivered on essentially what they promised.. Far better than what Sony promised.. remember those E3 videos of Killzone 2 and Motorstorm that turned out to be complete lies?. or how about there promise of 1080p graphics at 60fps. they can't even get there broken system to upscale properly. That is the system, although I enjoy, am most disappointed in.

Everybody loves the Wii for almost no reason at all besides that it came with Wii Sports. Theres been a few really cool things on the Wii like Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers, but honestly thats it. And at the end of last year nothing good came out at all. And dont even get me started on how terrible the graphics are for a console made in 2006. And some how this console still sells like hotcakes. If nothing comes out special on the Wii this year, the Wii will have brought only disgrace from the gaming community and should prouble be thrown into the garbage.

Seems to me that they've lived up to the promise. They have a lot of non-gamers now playing games and they are able to do it in a new way. This does not mean that every game for the Wii is amazing, but the sales of the Wii cannot be denied.
