You can earn gold by completing the beginner missions. To start these missions there is an advisor icon you can click while at the village screen. After the begginer missions the only way to acquire gold is to purchase it using real world funds. You have a number of options to pay for the gold, including direct credit card purchase and Paypal, as well as a few others.
