Is Extraction a transition from the first game to the second game? Would knowing that story make the story of Dead Space 2 any better?

Actually, I think it's a prequel to the first Dead Space. I think it's good background that gives more of the Dead Space lore, but it's not really essential to Isaac Clarke's story, so there's no need to play it first if you'd rather just jump into Dead Space 2.
Also, DS2 has a nice video that will catch you up on any of the story you may have missed/forgotten.
