VGA's gave it to Red Dead Redemption. And, well, they are wrong. In my opinion, Heavy Rain or Mass Effect 2 need to be the GotY for 2010. What do you think?

Would probably have to agree with you on Heavy Rain. I didn't actually play a lot of games this year, but Heavy Rain was truly awesome, memorable and a new experience for me.

Hard to say. The GotY would have to just surpass ALL expectations and just be great enough to eclipse any negative criticism directed towards it.
There are a lot of games that fit this category. Mass Effect 2 and Starcraft 2 certainly fit this. Limbo came and blew away all expectations for a standalone (not a sequel) and Heavy Rain just seems like an overly thought out cutscene story (but to be fair, I haven't played it).
But my vote would be Minecraft. Coming in out of left field, this was the year Minecraft spread like a virus among the gaming community.

I'd probably pick Mass Effect 2 over Red Dead, but Red Dead was a heck of a game too. I'm also a bit distraught to see Alan Wake getting little love in the "_______ of the year" lists too. Also, I feel as though Deadly Premonition deserves mention as my cult classic of 2010, it's a bad game in some regards, but it all comes together so inexplicably well that the game is just awesome overall.
