What does the "Touch Pad" do on the Rock Band 3 keyboard?

I see the thing pointed out in the manual, but haven't seen it referenced in the game. When is it used? Is it something only for Pro mode?

I think it is the keyboards equivalent to a whammy bar. You just swipe your fingers across it to use it..
