I don't know for sure, but after a game sees a significant drop in users game companies will oftentimes turn off the servers for a game to divert resources to something newer that will turn a larger profit. So it's possible that Battlefront 2's servers are off completely. Though to check, just make sure you have the PS2 internet adapter properly connected and the ethernet cable properly plugged in. If it still says you need a patch, check around the menus in the game to see if there's an option to update the game, but if it's telling you that and it won't let you download a patch, the servers are likely offline.
