is Sony's PS4 a threat to Gamefly

Sony said, on PS4 you will be able to rent every game, before you buy with Gaikai, I'm assuming we'll have to see how it all plays out. It could be kind of nifty. So does it end up being what amounts to a competitor to GameFly? where you can "rent" games on the fly.

if you can rent games on PS4 then why rent from Gamefly?

  1. I suppose it all depends on pricing/business model. If Sony's rentals through Gaikai are on a per-title basis for a limited amount of time, I suppose it would depend on how much you play, since GameFly offers a more "all you can eat" business model, where you pay a flat rate and can send games back whenever you want for another on your queue. Also, on Gamefly you can rent for any platform, so if you have more than one system that's an advantage Gamefly has. My guess is that both services will have their own niche that they fill, though I'm sure with the new generation of consoles coming up there's probably a lot of discussion at Gamefly of how they'll stay competitive.

    1. I don't think so. Microsoft and Nintendo are the people worried about the PS4; Gamefly is just waiting to cash in on the influx of new titles about to be released.

      1. It won't at first. Keep in mind that that they also said that all the features are still being developed and will be released in later updates. So the PS4 will be rather exclusive to PS4 games for a while until earlier-generation games are available on the GaiKai network. So Gamefly will still be the better choice for at least 2-4 years after the PS4 is released.

But on the other hand, if you have multiple platforms, Gamefly will be a good choice to have anyway.

        1. Well, digital downloads will run into the same complaint it always has. High speed internet just isn't where it needs to be, worldwide, for digital purchases and streaming to be the primary source or purchase. And I don't see it getting better before the release of the PS4 at this rate.
