i know that defiance is an mmo. but i was wondering if it will have some sort of mode that where you dont have to go online like single player or something like that, or do u have to play online? is the online free or do you have to pay a monthly subscription?

You'll have to pay for the game, but there won't be any subscription(just like in Guild Wars 2).
It's multiplayer at all times, but there's story missions were you'll be all by yourself. The devs focused more on grand, randomly generated co-op battles, and you can join pvp games whenever you want.
It seems like an mmo I might actually enjoy, and if you're curious you can apply for the beta at their website, or pre-order for a guaranteed spot in the beta.

No. The game is absolutely online, and you must go online to play it. You can play without a group or with a group, but there is no Off-Line mode.
Otherwise as answered, purchase of the game is free to play. There is no monthly subscription. If you play by XBox, you will have to have Gold to play, but nothing that you pay monthly to Trion (the game developer). The only added costs are optional boosts you can buy to improve your character or speed up your character progression. Downloadable Content is anticipated as being free to purchasers through and through, even future expansions are currently anticipated to be free (though some limited content within them may have charges to activate).
