Less linear? More linear? The same? More open world? Any changes to the battle system? Different types of characters? What would be the best design decisions for the series moving forward?

I have yet to play XIII, but I've never been disappointed in the gameplay of a Final Fantasy game. Characters and story, though, I think they should improve on a bit. Less linear might also be a good idea, because the open-world is something I do miss from the older games. I still think they come up with great designs for most things (monsters, summons, weapons, etc), but I want to see better character designs (both physically and personality-wise), and maybe more focus on relationships (not romantic relationships, but how all the characters relate to each other. You said yourself that you liked how there was some actual conflict between Snow and Lightning in XIII. They should do things like this more often and it will help the characters feel more three-dimensional). I've been slowly losing interest in the franchise since X, but I'm not saying they should go back to how the old games were, either, because I think they are still developing this series in some ways. All in all, I look forward to FF's future.

The FF games have always been forward thinking...not exactly the best when doing so, but very forward thinking.
However, with everything focusing on casual gaming, I can see the FF series going towards some kind of massively multiplayer online casual game with high graphics.
But that's just my opinion.

I would really like to see a game more like FFVII with a good main story (although linear) and fun little mini games to play and places to explore on the side. I like the battle system implemented in the latest game. And a change in the standard characters would be nice.

i think the main protaganist should lead a unit down the battlefield. leveling up would be done by crossing the end of the battlefield with the score orb. Shoes with spikes will be worn as well as padded armor. If final fantasy did this, then it would truly be great.
