Life. No really I would say probably the original Silent Hill when I was younger. The reason for this is, back then you didn't have everything you have now with the graphics, so they used that to their advantage, and let the fog effect play more on you. Also, there wasn't much in the way of many good horror games, so back then it was survival horror, with a push on the survival parts.
The controls were buggy, so you had to do the best with what you had. Plus now companies know many gamers will play 6-8 hours of a game and move on so they encourage people to make it through their games, giving you convenient drops/help along the way, where we didn't have that back then.
This is just MO, but old school horror all the way.
