Actually from what I can tell, your party lineup is pre-determined for many parts of the game, so you have to use certain characters at certain times. Though no matter who you use, it seems like every character gains the same amount of CP (this game's equivalent to experience) whether they're in the party or not, so it's not really something you have to worry about.
