Can I use my old RE5 data for the Gold edition?

If I were to rent Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, could I use the RE5 data I already have on my PS3, or would I have to start all over?

I think it should work like the GOTY edition of Fallout 3, where the game on the disc is the same as the original, so the same save files will work. The only difference between the versions is that the Gold edition has the DLC on the disc too.
