How do you kill enemies with a purple circle above their heads in Dante's Inferno?

This big guy appeared and has a purple circle over his head. Then all of the little minions that appeared also had it. What does it mean, how do you beat people that have the purple circle over them?

The enemy your talking about makes all the other enemies (and himself) invulnerable to the Holy Cross attacks. So you can kill them with your scythe, you just can't use your Holy Cross attacks. If you kill the skinny enemy with the staff the purple thing will go away. I fought some of those flame things and couldn't kill them until I took out the skinny guy.
