Is there a way to bait enemies into attacking in Assassin's Creed 2?

when there is a large group no one will actually attack me, so i cant counter them or disarm them. is there a way to speed fights up?

you can try to taunt them with 'y' or triangle, but usually they will try to hit you during the taunt so you dont get an opening to counter or attack
