In Assassin's Creed 2, can you kill the running guards in the tombs without being detected?

Can you catch the guards before they reach their buddies or do you always have to chase them all the way to the end every time?

Im pretty sure it is impossible i tried multiple time with no luck...even if you know exactly where you are going and make no mistakes, he is still just a little faster than you.
