I remember getting one sent to me for Battlefield 3 after I already spent the 800 MS points to buy the online pass. I have heard that without the online component of the game only the least favorable ending is available. Any chance GF will send out codes to us?

Only if you buy it. You will never get an online code after renting the game.

There's no chance, you'll have to do the same you did with BF3 and any game requiring a code. Developers use codes to discourage renters and people who buy used games.

Actually even without playing online you can still get the best ending, but it is a lot tougher because playing online you can get more rep and military strengh and thus need less assets in single player to get the best ending. So in other words that is a flat lie you can get the best ending by only doing single player it's just it will take longer. Codes only come with a purchase of the game.

You can still get the best ending if you get at least 4000 EMS by completing side missions and exploring. Try and do everything and try to max out either paragon or renegade as there is a scene you will need it for I believe, if you don't have at least 5000 EMS. This must all be done before a later mission with cerberus. You will recognize it when Anderson essentially tells you there is no going back when you start. If you purchase ME3 new you will get a pass or "keep it" early after release and you may have a very small chance of getting one from GF's initial purchase.
