some how in my import it said wrex had died in one but i remember beating 1 and haveing him alive anyway is there a way to start a male or female char with him alive?

There's a DLC on the Xbox Live Marketplace titled Mass Effect: Genesis for 320 Microsoft Points. It's an interactive comic that serves as a recap of the first Mass Effect and allows you to make key decisions from the first game for new characters in the second, including whether or not Wrex lives.
How it works is that once you spend the necessary $4 on the DLC, you start a new character and then play through the opening sequence where the Normandy is blowing up. Immediately after this, the motion comic is spliced into the game and you can now choose the outcome of several key plot points from Mass Effect 1.
