While you can understand 3 without playing the first two you would certainly get more out of it if you play the previous installments. And also, why not? They all have the same basic gameplay and are very enjoyable action adventure games.

Why would you want to start there? I have never played any of the 3 before but I am starting with 1 soon. You should always start a game series with the first game.

I say go for it! I played a little of the first one, watched the end of the second and have no desire to play the 3rd. I didn't care for the series. Have fun.
