Well yes and no. In single player/online play, you can only play as your Mii, When your playing local with your friends you can play as your Mii or one of the Mario/Dragon Quest characters.

  1. no, you can choose wether ot not you want to play as your mii in-game, but there is a variety of character you can play as in single player and miltiplayer but im not sure about online.
