I got Skyrim shipped a couple days ago and should have it today or tomorrow. I have played the hell out of Oblivion, but im sure Skyrim holds many new skills. I had a wicked mage argonian in Oblivion and I want to be a mage character in Skyrim as well. So with that said, does anyone have any advice on making a badass mage in Skyrim?

Try going with the Dark Mage. They are really awesome and that is what I am. Also smithing and enchanting is essential. Don't just fight a dragon straight away though although if you defeat one you get some dragon scales and bones and later with those you can create strong armor. And there is one sidequest early in the game. I forgot its name though. It is a hard sidequest but has benefits. I don't wanna spoil those benefits so you can just find out yourself. And like I said above. Smithing and enchanting early in the game can really help you later on. And Tepp's tips are also gold. So look at those as well.

The post I made and the contributors are all tips you should know going into skyrim.
The best additional tip I could give you is to not spread yourself to thin amongst the different skill trees, try not to lvl passed 50 if you want a somewhat challenging game and change the difficulty when it gets to easy to keep it engaging.
You can't play the game wrong so don't worry too much about classes, if you want more info I would look into the Skyrim wiki and check out character bonus, so you can pick the character type that most fits your ideal character.
For example if you want a thf ranger as a main, it wouldn't be ideal to pick a race built more for tanking. There is just too much to say about skyrim, the wiki is going to be your best source for comprehensive information.

If your going to be a mage remember to get the mage armor perk. Also remember that destruction magic only increases when used on valid targets.
Alteration, restoration work pretty well together. Illusion, alteration, and conjuration can all be increased just by practicing their spells. Also using bound weapons increase the conjuration skill, and the skill of whatever weapon you summon.
Its probably a good idea to stick with the lovers stone if you plan to do more than just cast spells.
My own personal recomondation is to do the main questline up till you become a thane, and then join the college of winterhold. That way you can start training right away.
