Happy 20th anniversary Sonic

as Sonic Generations is speeding towards it release day, has anyone ever beaten the first Sonic game in a whole playthrough without using the level select cheat. If so, have you beaten with or without the chaos emeralds.

I have never beaten the game in a whole playthrough, because I always lose my lives in a tricky part of a level. I'll always try and do this.
