Somewhat, you can go off and do whatever side missions you want, or spend the entire time solving riddles, but there is a overarching story you have to follow to gain new gadgets, areas to explore, and meet new characters. But trust me, this game is anything but a linear point a to point b game, and you will never want to stop playing.

No, it is linear and you have to walk in a designated path, but I am drooling waiting for monday so I can send back my game to get that. It has nothing but 10s and 9s in the ratings. I want Batman Arkham City so badly!

It has a large open-ish world, but it follows more of the Metroid/Castlevania design where only a small portion of the area is available to begin, but as you unlock new abilities you're able to explore more of the game.
