You do not need the code to enjoy regular game play. It is not online only. You only need the code if you wish to partake in the online play.
You can try the online play to see if that's something you want to buy. Each Xbox LIVE gamertag or Sony PSN ID is entitled to a free 7-day trial per title. Beyond that, you will be required to redeem or purchase Online Pass access.
On a side note Tiger Woods 12 is one of my favorite games. I think you may really enjoy it. Good luck and good gaming.
