For the Zumba fitness game for Wii, does the belt do anything besides hold the remote?

Basically, do you need the belt or you can do without? Does sticking the remote in your pocket work just the same?

The belt didn't make a bi difference in my experience, a little more comfortable than tossing the Wii-mote in your pocket.
