There's really no shortcuts in that game besides parts where you get to choose the path you take and one path is usually easier than the other. Such as the part where you flip a switch to either go left into a small village or right through a canyon. The left leads to an ambush by villagers while the right is just being chased by an El Gigante until you escape. I chose the right because ammo is crucial in that game and the less you expend the better.
