It kind of seems like gf is half twitter because you can talk to people and follow them.

It is similar to Twitter. I believe they are just branching out to give it more of a social feel, and that way people will go to the site for more than just managing their GameQ, and therefore giving Gamefly more advertisement dollars. :)
