How do you avoid blue shells in Mario Kart for the Wii?

The best thing to do in this situation is to get as close as possible to the players behind you (since you're probably not going to get a mushroom). That way, not only does the shell take you out, it takes the person in second and possibly third out too. Hopefully, if you recover fast enough, you can retake the lead.

The secret is in the mushroom. As soon as the blue shell stops in the air and begins to getting to you, use your precious mushroom and it will protect you.

That mushroom thing sounds like it would work, but if youve been in first place for a while most likely you arent going to get a mushroom.
