What Brrrice said, get out of the town and AWAY from the townsfolk, however far you need to go, then wait for at least three days. There is at least one area where the residents won't 'forgive' you, possibly more, but in most cases they'll calm down.
You probably inadvertently actived or picked something up that was an 'owned' item, it's easily done, just be careful about manipulating things when they're in settlements, scavengers' digs etc.

From my knowledge, If the townspeople attack you, it generally means that you are seen as evil. Try doing more good deeds?

try waiting for 3 days OUTSIDE the town. Usually, that will calm them down.
