I know this game has aged a lot since 2006, but i'm not the type to skip over a game if i don't have too.

I found the story dry and unimpressive, but if you want to make sure all plot points are hit, then yes there are somethings that happen in that game that lead to other things happening.
If you can I would play the game co-op it was fun, I think its only couch co-op though, I don't remember there being online co-op.
Since you just talking a rental its worth playing through if you want to get invested into the series.

I always recommend playing the games in a series in order. It gives you the story firsthand and lets you see how the series has progressed since the first one. Also, playing the games in order gives you a cheaper entry into the series since the first one is likely discounted if you're going to buy it, or is likely available immediately through Gamefly.
