What other things do I need to trouble shoot?

no. Check to see if the disc is dirty or scratched, that is the first place to check. If not, try putting another Wii game in. If that doesn't work than there could be something wrong with the disc drive in your Wii.

I doubt it, like nnepervu said I would check the disc to make sure it isn't scratched up or anything.

Disc can't be read only relate to the system itself. No external controllers affect that.
Assuming that another games load with no problems in the system, I would check the back for finger prints and scratches. Try cleaning the disc with a soft material as not to scratch it. If it has cracks it most likely will not play.
If nothing is working contact gamefly tech support to get a new copy sent out to you.
