It is definitely different, but I would bet that you enjoy it. There is more of a 3-rd person shooter element to Mass Effect 2 compared to Oblivion. I would suggest playing Mass Effect 1 first if you like Oblivion, it plays more like an RPG than ME 2.

Yes. Oblivion is more of an open world game, and while Mass Effect has smaller planets and areas to explore, there's still a ton of freedom in what you do when. Also, it's got some good depth in the RPG leveling up and such and gives you cool skills as applied to cover-based shooting combat.

Well they are technically both in the same genre but also they play much differently from each other. Oblivion has a completely open world where as Mass Effect 2 has a much smaller and limited area. Also, Oblivion uses a completely different weapon set. Oblivion uses swords, axes, bows and arrows, etc. while Mass Effect 2 uses guns. They are the same and different in many ways but I would recommend at least trying Mass Effect 2 because of its great campaign.

Mass Effect games are RPG-Shooters. They are also fairly linear games, because they are more about telling a story. You get full customization and everything you'd expect from an RPG with one glaring detail omitted - no inventory in Mass Effect 2.
Honestly, if you like Oblivion and games like that, then you should like Mass Effect. If you've played KOTOR, even games like Gears of War, then you will probably like Mass Effect.
I've played all of the Mass Effect games, and while I recommend playing the first yourself, you don't have to if you get the PS3 version. The PS3 version is the superior version of the game, because you get ALL DLC (up until the point of it's release) included, and a nice interactive story that allows you to pick all the important things that happened in Mass Effect 1.

Depends on rather midevil setting is a huge attraction to you or not. Mass Effect games are Sci-fi and not open world like oblivion, they are also shooter based. The only thing they really share is that they are RPG's.
If you decide to try Mass Effect, assuming you are playing on 360 I would start with ME1, reason being the choices you make in that game effect ME2, and the combined choices you make in ME1 and ME2 will effect ME3 which comes out later this year.
