Nintendogs + Cats requires a 3DS to work, since it not only takes advantage of 3D effects, but also takes advantage of better graphics from the higher specs of the 3DS.

You need a 3DS because of not only the size and shape of the cartrige but the visual and feateres (like pedometer).
