I know you could actually talk and get to know your companions better and based on your choice of phrase their friendship would increase or decrease, but in Dragon Age 2 it seems they have removed that entirely and only mission happenings help, but is there a way to increase the relationship without the hassle?

Do companion missions and buy gifts. You can buy gifts from merchants around the city, i think its only one per companion though.

If you play through more than once than you will notice the companion rating drop or raise during choices so ex: Mira the elf if you go on the exorsist achievement quest then ever scroll you destroy is -15 points in her companion state tracker. On the opposite end ex: if you take anders and side withe the mates all the time then his approval stats will raise quicker. There are also side quests you can do like helping anders. With justice or Mira withe the mirror quest. The gifts can be found mostly in shops look for the status of the item under the name or requirements. If you have trouble go to the dragon age wiki or Google the exact thing you are looking for.
