i want to rent dead space 2 but, i dont want to rent it and find out i need to play dead space 1 to understand the story.

As James said there is a story recap on the game (i played 360 version) and the narrative does a good job of not letting people who might not have played the first feel left out or confused so go ahead and get its a great game including the new dlc :)

I would say no, but its better if you at least play it a little to kinda know whats going on. However that being said, there was a brief introduction to the story line on the single player campaign (at least on PS3).

Sort of, but there's a recap movie you can watch in Dead Space 2 to get you up to speed.
