They are basically the same game, with the same story and characters. Each version has different locations and Pokemon that only appear in one version.

There are slight differences in each game that counter the other, nothing to dramatic. A few different pokemon might appear in black than in white and vice versa. Other than a few more changes there isn't really all that big of a difference in the two games
