The game saves automatically at certain times, but if you die you will still have to start the level over. The game saves so it can remember what armor/items you have and what level you are, stuff like that. You can force the game to save at any time by bringing up your item menu like you are goin to use an item, then exiting. A small, blue sphere will appear in the corner of the screen while the game is in the process of saving.
