John Madden retired today from annoucing for the NFL - how long before he retires from his video game?

Not for a long time. You must remember that Madden is a name that many many people know. It would be a finiancial disaster for EA to pick a new name for the title. Also he is very respected in the football world for being a good coach,player, annoucner. I would not be surprised to see madden himself on the madden 10 game or the madden 11.

What are good Co-op games?

The best co-op's im my opinion are Gears of War 2, and Rainbow 6 vegas. Also another big one is Army of Two... If you dont like shooters try Red Alert 3, its a very good co-op game that is a stratagey game. Army of two and Gears are the most fun though I would say.
