Y's: The Ark of Napishtim for PlayStation 2 Reviews by Gamers

Y's: The Ark of Napishtim looked, from the screenshots, like an alright game. Some of the pictures reminded me of Alundra 2, a game with similar, but not identical, gameplay.

However, the game really let me down.

First of all, the plot. Let's start with that. The opening cutscene is, well, quite gorgeous really. I thought it was pretty well done for the most part. However, there were just...countless clichés.

It starts with you in a bar eating with a buff looking man, who's digging his teeth into a piece of chicken, when a man dressed as a pirate approaches you and asks you to ...travel the world with him. Yeah, I didn't get it either. Suddenly, you're wanted for something that isn't quite explained. So you and some hooded girl run onto a ship and make your escape, an escape with absolutely no weight attached since, you have no idea why the main character is wanted and you don't know who he is, period. Anyway, then you figure out the girl is someone you previously knew. After a two-second introduction you get attacked by pirates. The girl falls off the ship and you catch her. Then the same happens to you, but she doesn't catch you. You eventually wash up on shore and this is how the story begins. For me, there was not much reason to keep playing because the story is essentially directionless. I did, however, keep playing so that I could try out the combat system, which is what I'm going to talk about next.

The combat is extremely repetitive. Apparently you get more swords with different powers as you keep playing (3 in total), but the combat is so unrewarding, so uninteresting, that I didn't want to get new swords. You can slash your sword 3 times by pressing the square button, and can jump with the X button. The main character must be related to MJ, because he sure can jump. Everything feels very sloppy and limited. Monsters can gang up on you and kill you in an instant, which is not fun at all.

I only recommend this game the younger audience, or Y's fans.

I'll be honest, I have loved the y's series since the turbo graphics era y's book 1&2,Great music, vibrant characters, fun game. I have heard there are much better y's games out there but so far non of them have been translated. I hope konami will translate more falcom games.
