I began playing Ys with its release on the Sega Master System. I then got a turbografx CD and played "Ys Book 1 and 2."
I am directing this review primarily to those who, like myself, have played other Ys games before.
If you played and enjoyed them, and you are feeling nostalgic, then you will find much to enjoy here. The game plays like it always has (with the exception of pressing a button to swing your sword as opposed to strategically ramming the bad guys).
The game is an odd release for these days because it is not very advanced. It is barely longer than "Book 1 and 2," and the graphics, though decent (especially the bosses) truly pale when compared to other modern games. That has never been the point with this series however, as the graphics have always been on the low end of the spectrum. The point has been to simply make a fun game with likable characters, and this game fulfills that. It's good to see Adol back in the US and in english.
If you like the series, play it; This is more of the same that hooked you before. Just don't expect a huge leap in technology. If you don't like the series, this game will not change your mind. If you don't know about the series, this game is decent, but it isn't "Zelda: Twilight Princess" so don't expect something amazing.
