I have never played a turn-based game until this one. It was great for what it was in the sense that there are aliens and you are trying to kill them before they kill you. I just don't like turned-based games because they take a little more time to get into than other games. XCOM:EU has great graphics and well, the control that you have is cool like when attacking an enemy it goes into this behind the back view but you still can't really move when you want, ever. You have 2 moves and then it is the enemies turn, like a board game or something. For what it is, though, it is good and a lot of people like these kinds of games. If you do like turn-based game than this is probably one of the best. It is gory and dark. Overall, a great game. I heard they are coming out with another XCOM not too long from now which may be a first person shooter which would be awesome with this story. I usually don't like aliens but the aliens in XCOM feel organic even though they are cliche. Ironic, I know. I would say rent if you are curious or a fan of turn-based games.
Some gamers lament the days when video games were excruciatingly difficult. I don't. I like to rent games, have fun, and try a new one. So when a game with a lot of cool features is done in by the refusal to offer anything resembling a fair level of difficulty, it's very frustrating. It's even more frustrating when they show you the features of the game at a manageable level before just ramping it up 18 notches when you were having a perfectly good time beforehand. Only a third of people who started this game finished it, despite it being a very fun setup that begs for you to continue. That tells you all you need to know.

In my opinion an absolute travesty of a game. The AI is immaculate with it's accuracy and ability to critical hit and kill your troops with just 1 shot.
The game likes to MAKE you go to far out JUST to actually find the aliens. And when you do find them you already being flanked because the game forces you to go so far out. And you can kiss any soldiers in that predicament good bye INSTANTLY. Nobody survives anything more than 2 hits.
And all of this is on the LOWEST difficulty. If you have never played an XCOM game before, don't play this one. It's unforgiving with no previous experience.
I suggest never buy or even rent this game if you haven't played a previous title. Firaxis has lost a lot of credibility in my eyes because of this unforgiving mess of a game.
