I have yet to play the first X-Men Legends game or Ultimate Alliance but I was breath taken when I first started this game up. The graphics are beautiful, the voice acting is superb and the gameplay. Oh the gameplay.
I will start this off by saying that I'm an old-time X-Men fan. I collected their comics back in the late 80s but stopped and sold them all in the early 90s. I haven't followed comics since then. I remember when X-Men came out on the NES, I was so disappointed. Over the years, various X-Men games have come out but they've never been that great.
X-Men Legends 2 combines fast paced action, RPG elements, and an almost unlimited amount of customization to your team. You can pick and choose from almost 20 characters and match them into groups of four. Some combos go well together and some do not.
The story line is alright. Some big bad guy is trying to destroy the universe and only the X-Men can save the day. You chase him down through five stages.
My only real gripe with the game is the enemies you fight. Most of the bad guys are just common drones with little to no resemblance to anything from any comic book whatsoever. With the exception of a few Brood and the Sentinels, I could be battling bad guys from Star Wars, Halo or any other amount of generic baddies. Also, the half dozen or so bosses you fight aren't some of the more famous villains. I know that Magneto and the Brotherhood are playable characters but there's so many cool villains in the X-Men universe. Why did they have to choose guys like Sauron or Omega Red? The boss battles also, IMHO, didn't really capture the energy from the comic books. Even on hard difficulty, its just a matter of getting close enough to the boss and spamming a mutant power until your energy is gone, using a potion and doing it all over again.
All in all, its a great game. Wonderful gameplay, lots of customization, nice sound and a great cast of characters.
