Developer Team 17 has already given Wii owners a taste of its long-standing and lucrative Worms franchise, but there was one little omission from A Space Oddity that bothered fans quite a bit. It didn't feature any online multiplayer component -- a glaring oversight, as far as we're concerned. Now, though, the software house is back with Worms: Battle Islands, shown for the first time at Nintendo of Europe's media summit this week, and we're happy to announce that Wi-Fi support is in, finally. You might just be pleased to learn that if you shelled out for the retail version of the title and don't want to pay full price for a sequel, you won't have to. Battle Islands is coming to WiiWare, which means you'll be able to get it on the cheap. No U.S. release date has been set for the title yet, though.
The title takes place on a secret island base and your goal, as always, is to control battalions of worms and send them to war against other infantry units, using all the weapons you can find to defeat the enemy. The action is turn-based -- you fire off a round and then the opposition return the favor. The last man standing wins. This time around, though, you'll be able to create your own weapons using the technology crates you amass from the single-player campaigns.
Battle Islands boasts new weapons like the flare and the EMP grenade -- the latter of which can undoubtedly be used skillfully to render high-tech weapons temporarily obsolete. In addition, the project includes all the dozens of weapons you've come to expect from the franchise.
Team 17 says that you'll be able to play with or without motion controls depending on your preference. If you don't want to waggle, you simply turn the remote on its side and use the classic setup.
Meanwhile, the developer confirms that you can "play multiplayer with your friends via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection," but thus far, specifics with regard to the online play are still incoming. We'll update the story as details become available.
While you wait, check out the trailer and screens.
