What better place to look for a mini game compilation than the Olympic Sports? Each event in the Olympics is a minigame.
Winter Sports 3: The Great Tournament (this review’s for the Wii Version) is yet another compilation attempting to capitalize on the Wii Minigame frenzy. Here, you get eight games: Bobsled, Snowboard Cross, Shorttrack (Speed Skating), Biathlon, Freeride Skiing, Downhill Skiing, Ski Flying (Ski Jump) and Figure Skating.
But just like many other compilations on the Wii, this game delivers a flat gaming experience instead of going for something special. The shelf life of this game is very short.
The freestyle skiing and Snowboarding don’t encourage me to do tricks; I got the best results by racing down the hill and getting to the finish line first.
The Downhill Skiing, Bobsled, and Biathlon have a few unlocked courses which can get boring after a very short while. Unlocking the rest requires a trip through the Challenge Mode, which I found annoying.
The Figure Skating and Ski Flying are easy to do, but once I got the idea behind the minigames, I had no desire to give either one of them another go.
As for the Biathlon, well, it has issues with controls - namely in the shooting half of the game (Why does the targeting icon have to move so much?)
You can play any event singularly, as part of a cup, in Career Mode, or take on the challenges in Challenge Mode. But with lacking core gameplay, all these modes become irrelevant.
Winter Sports 3: The Great Tournament (for the Wii) is just another bland minigame compilation in a system that’s supersaturated with bland minigame compilations. SKIP IT
