For some of us, thoughts of winter bring memories of the two snowstorms that left us buried under three feet of snow, and counting down the days until spring arrives and the snow melts.
Winter Blast: 9 Snow and Ice Games tries to make the natural, white, powdery stuff that falls from the sky fun.
There are 9 games in the collection: Biathlon, Half Pipe, Snowboard Freeride, Ski Jump, Slalom, Sledding, Shootout, Hockey and Snowball Fight. But each game has flaws that take a lot of fun out of the compilation.
I like the Slalom and the Sledding the best, but these are not true racing games; it’s one at a time, you have to wait your turn.
The Snowboarding games are okay, but the instructions don’t tell you that you have to be turning in order to perform tricks, and that you have to hold down the button(s) to do that particular trick.
Shootout is fine, but it can get old really quick; there needs to be a bigger variety of targets.
Ski Jump is also okay, but it’s the same Wiimote motions over and over and over again, making the game dull.
Snowball Fight could be great if it utilized the Wiimote to point and shoot, but it does not; you just wave it and hope you hit the opposing team.
Biathlon’s problems are the controls that don’t respond well, and for some strange reason, the targets that are planted firmly into the ground move about in an erratic fashion. How is that possible?
Which brings us to the worst of the bunch: Hockey. The game play is erratic; shooting the puck on goal is too much of a hit or miss affair and any AI players on your team are not much help at all.
What makes this compilation really boring is the flat presentation; there’s nothing to unlock from winning the games. The avatars you use can't be modified in any way.
Winter Blast: 9 Snow and Ice Games is another of the bargain basement compilations that didn’t get enough imagination or inventiveness put into it to make it fun. SKIP IT.
